Salty Sweet Snickers

These creamy, salty, rich homemade snickers are so delicious! You will not be able to eat store-bought snickers ever again.

Salty Sweet Snickers

I love eating candy especially anything with chocolate in it. I honestly never enjoyed eating Snickers as a kid because I felt the bar was too hard and I like richer chocolate candies. These homemade Snickers are even better than what you can buy at the store. They have a tasty creamy caramel flavor from the nougat layer paired with a nutty flavor from the peanuts, peanut butter, and cashew butter. The best part of these Snickers is that they are double layered with rich dark chocolate on top of the nougat layer. Every bite you take of these Snickers is a little bit chewy, a little bit crunchy, and a little bit sweet. It is the perfect combination of salty and sweetness in a candy bar. These snickers will last for weeks in your fridge or freezer so there is always a sweet treat waiting to be eaten at the end of the day.

How to making candy at home?

This is my first time making candy at home and it was a lot easier to make than I thought it would be. There are a lot of steps in this process but these snickers don't take long and don't require a lot of ingredients. There is absolutely no baking at all! It is also fun to make the Snickers to your liking by being creative with the different layers. You can change out many of the ingredients with the ones you like. These can be made gluten-free and vegan. I had a lot of fun making these snickers. I am going to have to try to recreate different candy bars that I love. Maybe Twix? or Nutter Butters? Reese peanut butter cups? or Musketeers? There are so many great options to try!

Snickers

Snickers Inside

February is a big birthday month for my family and friends and I decided to make candy for one of my girlfriend's birthdays. It is the perfect treat to share with friends because these Snickers store well. I shipped these bars to my friend and thankfully they survived shipment. Candies are the easiest of treats to ship to people because they don't break easily and can last for a few weeks.

What is so great about Snickers?

We have probably all had a Snickers bar at one point in our lives. I know I use to eat them when I was a kid. Snickers Bars are a chocolate-covered candy with a chewy nougat layer with roasted peanuts and caramel inside. Snickers are so so sweet because of the caramel and chocolate and of course, they are delicious to eat!

This recipe is nice because it is a healthier version of Snickers with less of that over-processed sugary stuff that is added in the store-bought ones. You can adjust this recipe to make it more or less sweet to your liking. Try these out. They are so so GOOD!

Snickers Inside

A few tips:

  • Chocolate layer - if you love chocolate as much as I do, I would recommend double-dipping the nougat layer in the chocolate for a thicker coat. I used high-quality chocolate for these Snickers for an extra tasty candy bar. The chocolate I used is a Lindt dark chocolate bar.

  • Nougat layer - this layer needs to be very cold and solid before dipping it into chocolate. The frozen nougat layer will allow the chocolate to set and form that beautiful candy look.

  • Make it vegan and gluten-free - you can make these bars even healthier by substituting the butter with coconut oil and the flour with coconut flour.

  • Storage - I prefer these Snickers frozen and they will last in the freezer for a few months. If you store these in the fridge they will last for about 2 weeks.

  • Coconut cream - I used a full fat can of coconut milk which makes a richer caramel layer. You don't need the water at the bottom of the can, only use the coconut cream for the Snickers. This will ensure the caramel is thick, creamy, and the perfect consistency.

Sweet Salty Snickers

Serving size: 20-30 snickers

Total Time: 3 hours

Source: Adapted from halfbakedharvest

  • 3/4 cup cashew butter

  • 1/4 cup and 1 tablespoon butter, melted

  • 4-6 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 3 teaspoons vanilla

  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt

  • 1 1/2 cups maple syrup

  • 3/4 cup coconut milk, only the cream

  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter

  • 1 cup roasted peanuts

  • 1 1/2 cups dark chocolate

Step 1: Line an 8x8 inch baking dish with parchment paper.

Step 2: To make the base layer, in a bowl melt together the cashew butter, 1/4 cup butter, and 1/4 cup maple syrup over the stovetop or in the microwave. Add in 1 teaspoon vanilla, 4 tablespoons flour, and salt until combined. Spread the mix into the baking dish. Add 2/3 cup peanuts evenly over top. Freeze until the base layer is firm, about 20 minutes.

Step 3: In a medium pot, combine 1 cup maple syrup and 1/2 cup coconut cream. Bring this mixture to a boil over high heat. This should take about 8-10 minutes. The mixture should form a thick caramel sauce consistency. Once the sauce has formed, remove from the heat and add in the peanut butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Pour the mixture over the base layer in the baking dish. Freeze this layer again.

Step 4: In a medium pot, add 1/2 cup maple syrup and 1/4 cup coconut cream. Bring to a boil for about 8-12 minutes or until a thickened caramel-like sauce forms. Remove from the heat and add in 1 teaspoon vanilla. Take in baking dish out of the freezer and pour the sauce on top, then sprinkle 1/3 cup peanuts over the caramel. Freeze for about 1-2 hours, until the caramel is firm.

Step 5: Cut into squares. You can make larger 16 squares or smaller 20 squares. Freeze the individual pieces on parchment paper on a baking sheet for 15 minutes.

Melt the chocolate and 1 tablespoon butter over stovetop or in the microwave until melted and smooth. Let cool for 5 minutes. Remove the base layer from the freezer and dip each bar in chocolate, you can use a fork to dip each bar into chocolate. After you have dipped all pieces in chocolate, return to the freezer to let the chocolate set, about 10-15 minutes. The snickers will store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks or in the freezer for a few months.
