Oreo Malt Chocolate Chip Cookies

The inspiration...

I am absolutely obsessed with baking and eating these cookies. It took me a few tries to create the perfect Oreo malt cookie. Like most people, I grew up eating way too many cookies especially Oreo cookies. I use to want to only eat the inside of an Oreo cookie because I loved the creaminess. There was this local diner that my friends and I ate at almost every weekend and some weekday evenings. The diner was the place to hang out as a young kid because the food was quick and delicious! Breakfast, lunch, dinner, the diner had all you can eat at any time of day. I use to order this Oreo malt milkshake because these shakes were creamy and oh so good! These milkshakes were addicting to drink, they had me coming back way too many times. I was inspired by this childhood memory so I made these cookies. My goal for these cookies is to have them taste like those Oreo malt milkshakes I use to order at the diner. I want that rich, malt, chocolate flavor filled with Oreo crumbs and a creamy flavor that comes from those decadent white chocolate chips. I promise you every bite will remind you of an Oreo malt milkshake. These cookies are like drinking a milkshake you won't want to stop.

These are the perfect cookies to make for a celebration because they will be a huge hit and they are easy to bake up in large batches. I love that cookies are easy to make and eating a cookie can put a smile on anyone's face. You must try these out. They have become my go-to cookie recipe for occasions and to satisfy a cookie craving!

A few tips:

  • Malt mix - the malt mix I used for this recipe is from Ovaltine - Chocolate Malt. It is a childhood favorite for making chocolate milk or hot chocolate and it tastes delicious in these cookies.

  • Crushing the Oreos - to crush the Oreos I put the cookies in a plastic bag and use the bottom of a cup to smash. I like my pieces to be very fine crumbs so that when I mix the Oreo crumbs in the batter I get a strong Oreo flavor. I also crush a few Oreos by hand to mix in larger chunks.

  • Refrigerate the dough - this step can't be skipped since we are partially melting the butter. The dough needs an hour or so to cool down before you bake them in the oven. If you don't cool the dough, the cookies will come out too flat.

  • 1 cup brown sugar

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 cup malt powder

  • 1 cup crushed Oreos

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

  • 1 cup white chocolate chips

Step 1: Melt the butter in the microwave for 30 seconds until semi-soft. Add the softened butter into a bowl with the brown sugar and sugar. Mix until smooth, about 2 minutes.

Step 2: Whisk in the eggs. Add the malt powder, salt, baking powder, baking soda, cornstarch, and flour.

Step 3: Add the Oreos to a plastic bag and smash with the back of a cup or mallet to form tiny pieces. Fold in the crushed Oreos, chocolate chips, white chocolate chips.

Step 4: Refrigerate for at least an hour. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Scoop 1 tablespoon of cookie dough for each cookie onto a baking sheet. Bake for 10 - 12 minutes. Take out when the inside still looks undone and let cool for 10 minutes. Enjoy!
